Help & FAQ
Answers to the most common questions about using AccesPub.
Workflow
What steps do I follow to remediate an EPUB?
Upload your EPUB on the home page. AccesPub will analyse it and apply all automatic fixes. Then review the report: check images that need alt text, verify tables, and address any manual issues. Finally, go to Export to download the accessible EPUB together with its conformance report.
Images & alt text
What is alt text and why does it matter?
Alt text (alternative text) is a short description of an image. It is read aloud by screen readers for users who are blind or have low vision. Without it, images are invisible to those users. WCAG 2.1 requires alt text for all meaningful images.
When should I mark an image as decorative?
Mark an image as decorative when it adds no information — for example, a purely ornamental divider, a background texture, or a repeated logo. AccesPub will set an empty alt="" so screen readers skip it correctly.
How does the AI-generated alt text work?
When a Google Gemini API key is configured, AccesPub sends each image to the model and receives a suggested description. This suggestion is shown as a starting point — always review it before saving, as AI can make mistakes, especially with charts, diagrams, or text-heavy images.
EPUB & accessibility standards
Which accessibility standard does AccesPub target?
AccesPub aims for WCAG 2.1 Level AA conformance and EPUB Accessibility 1.1 (which references WCAG 2.1). This is the level required by the European Accessibility Act (EAA) for digital publications sold in the EU from June 2025.
What is EPUBCheck and why does it matter?
EPUBCheck is the official IDPF/W3C validator for EPUB files. AccesPub runs it automatically after remediation. Passing EPUBCheck with zero errors is a prerequisite for declaring EPUB Accessibility conformance. Warnings are advisories that you should review but do not block conformance.
Why can't AccesPub process Fixed Layout EPUBs?
Fixed Layout EPUBs are designed as pixel-perfect replicas of printed pages. The format is inherently inaccessible because content cannot reflow or adapt to user needs (font size, screen size, assistive technology). The EPUB Accessibility standard does not cover Fixed Layout. Please use reflowable EPUBs instead.
Credits & limits
What is a credit?
One credit is consumed each time you upload and process an EPUB. The credit is deducted after the file has been analysed and all automatic fixes applied, regardless of whether you download the result.
Is there a file size limit?
Yes, AccesPub accepts files up to 50 MB. If your EPUB is larger, contact us by email and we will find an alternative way to process it.

How can I get support or report a problem?
Email us at info@abserveis.net. Include the name of the EPUB and a description of the issue. If you can share the file, that will help us investigate faster.
